Please note that if the windows have any grit on them or the sills or frames, you will need to purchase your own microfiber cloths for the cleaning. Also, because the dirt in Phoenix is like sand and eventually roughens up paint, making surfaces harder to clean over time, it's best to limit the amount that lands on the sills and frames and clean it off quickly (when it can still be removed with light pressure). Painting is not quick or cheap!

Additionally, pro exterior window cleaners are probably the best choice for exterior windows as they're fast and have special tools and techniques just for windows--squeegees and a special pattern for covering the area without leaving lines.

Otherwise, it will spread to vulnerable surfaces (anything stainless steel or steel is at risk especially if scratched) quite possibly including metal pipes, and you certainly don't want that. Plus, I'm pretty certain you don't want the stuff in your body, either, as it's an oxidizer, the opposite of an antioxidant. (Note: Most of the products I use are green/natural/safe, but the knife and blender seemed to call for something special that may or may not be green. It is, however, concentrated and low odor.)

The below is rust on travertine.

I was able to remove almost all of the rust along with the mineral layer that had accumulated.

Some rust is the result of improper cleaning agents (e.g., abrasives) breaking through the protective layer. Don't scratch chrome as the following damage is impossible to fix. The fixture must be replaced.

These pans dripped rust onto the floor of the oven in the below photograph, and rust spread around carelessly can transfer! I took care to wipe up very carefully, with several disposable cloths, the rust drip, and the homeowner trashed the pans.

Also, regarding the surface to be treated... Removing hard water spots from brushed stainless, painted/finished metals and the newer colored metals is much riskier. They can chemically react with some acids and are prone to scratching.

I have tested a pretty big number of hard water removing products on water in one of two parts of the country, and most of them produced laughable results or did damage (e.g., scratches all over the surface!). A small shower can take up to about three hours to restore, but even after a year of 2x/month normal cleaning (by me with my knowledge), the new spots on the second shower (in another state where the tap water minerals were supremely difficult to remove but not as plentiful as in Phoenix) were hardly noticeable unless wet.

A shower without spots is much easier to clean. Worth it, I'd say. Additionally, just after removal, one can add a quality sealer--I tested many, and it takes for a small amount of glass about another hour of time--that will prevent adhesion for a year as long as no harsh cleaning agents are used.

(The blue bowl in this set is a bought-used and already a little scratched water dish.)
